Clock Tower elevation survey

EK Specialist Surveys was instructed to undertake a visual drone survey of the clocktower to assist our client in identifying any defects to the  stonework or masonry

EK Specialist Surveys was instructed to undertake a visual drone survey of the clocktower to assist our client in identifying any defects to the  stonework or masonry. We were asked for images to zoom in on any key defects and clearly record the current condition of the clocktower.

The drone was used to enable full inspection of the elevations of the clocktower without the need for other more expensive and intrusive access solutions such as scaffolding. The extremely central and busy location also meant a safe and time efficient method was required to record all necessary data, this involved the survey having to take place on an early Sunday morning with minimising traffic in the area.

Using the drone ensured close inspection of the various elements of the Clock Tower.

Challenges for the drone team included:

  • Management of the operation area as members of the public were present throughout the duration of the survey.
  • Keeping VLOS(visual line of sight), this required a lot of movement and communication between ground crew and the remote pilot.
  • Skilled flying of the drone around the clock tower.

Due to the clock tower being located within a town hall, liaising with security and the H&S team was key to a safe and efficient operation.
